Planning is second nature to all involved in the delivery of products and services for clients with disabilities. 

However, it is common for individual providers to focus on the micro scale, for example on an individual therapy or care service in isolation. An isolated and phased approach is not ideal during the design, build or adaptation of a client’s forever home. 

Architects, designers, trades and services often work alongside each other during differing phases of a build/adaptation. The physical accessibility of a property (compliance with Part M of the building regulations) including the “ installation of equipment is all too often settled before the notion of how the client will interact and control their environment arises. 

Unfortunately, in these cases the opportunity to create a home that truly works for the client is lost. The father of modern architecture Le Corbusier once famously stated, “A house is a machine for living in.” 

In the case of clients with disabilities, a home should address their physical cognitive and sensory needs as well as being somewhere to thrive. 

The My Ecosystem approach is to start with a blank sheet of paper. Working with all stakeholders, we design a home from the ground up that includes specific technologies to suit the individual.

Our model builds on the notion that a core technology backbone can be employed to deliver multiple outcomes (for example a property that is both accessible and has a low carbon footprint) if one truly understands the user’s needs and aspiration and starts the process early enough.
